Artist statement

The language of violence is one that is universal, and it is a key part in what makes us human. In my work, I interrogate the moral complexities of violent acts as viewed through a queer, female lens. Driven by my fascination with the genre of horror, my paintings explore subject matter such as cults, violence, and crime. Fear, power, and the unnatural underscore the work as I contemplate how these concepts operate. My work is typically figurative in nature, with portraits and scene paintings exploring the juxtaposition between beauty, joy, and terror. Using traditional methods such as alla prima oil painting and glazing, I describe unsettling imagery in a visually enticing way. The female subjects featured in my work have complete agency and control, challenging the relationship between subject and viewer, staring with neutral, unwavering gazes.

My current body of work centers around the idea of violence, stripped of its typical moral associations. Within narrative, cinematic scenes, I reframe violent acts as a tool for leveraging power against traditional oppressors. The women in my paintings are agents of their own choices, engaging in brutality as a form of resistance. In a world where women’s voices are constantly silenced, I choose to use the visual language of violence to explore a reversal of traditional power dynamics.
